WILSON: Christmas songs are about lacking folks or eager to be along with somebody, , whether or not together with your lover or with household or no matter it may be, and this query of whether or not or not you will be collectively. So even Mariah Carey’s “All I Need For Christmas Is You” has that sort of undercurrent of, like, are we going to be collectively at Christmas?

(SOUNDBITE OF SONG, “ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU”)

MARIAH CAREY: (Singing) All I need for Christmas is you.

GUEVARA: And new Christmas craving songs are nonetheless being recorded immediately.

ALEX CRICHTON: I wished to make a Christmas track. However I did not need it to be, like, a standard Christmas track, like, speaking about, like, snow and reindeer and stuff.

GUEVARA: That is Ottawa-based songwriter Alex Crichton. He launched “Merry Christmas, I Miss You” final 12 months. In it, he debates whether or not to name somebody he misses on Christmas.

Yearly, going into the vacations, I am reminded of previous relationships. You recognize, folks you spent previous Christmases with that perhaps aren’t in your life anymore, folks that you could’t see.

GUEVARA: It is Crichton’s most listened to track, with over 12 million performs on Spotify. He did not write it with the phrase craving in thoughts.

CRICHTON: However I feel as I shared it with folks and as folks defined what it means to them, I noticed that, yeah, the way in which I used to be feeling was craving or reminiscing.

GUEVARA: Critic Carl Wilson says the mixture of Christmas plus craving simply works, including to the vary of feelings folks really feel across the holidays.

WILSON: Craving is admittedly basic to one thing about what music does. And so when, like, these two issues come collectively, I feel that is a part of actually why Christmas music is so highly effective.

GUEVARA: So when you’re craving for one thing or somebody this Christmas, there’s most likely a track for you.
