charlie cook: “Self-declaring a mandate is a cardinal sin in politics. Anyone who thinks voters gave President Trump a mandate on November 5th is sadly mistaken. Democrats lose Vice President Kamala Harris It is natural to be upset and disappointed, but Trump’s landslide victory in all seven battleground states was by no means a landslide. While his wins were impressive – 1.4 points in Michigan, 1.75 points in Pennsylvania, 2.19 points in Georgia, 3.1 points in Nevada, and 3.32 points in North Carolina – most polls still have a margin of error. Only his 5.54 point win in Arizona raised any eyebrows.
“Given how few Democrats ended up taking issue with the presidential election results, this election was about a very concentrated and targeted repudiation of the Biden-Harris administration. Republicans are likely to win about 221 or 222 seats in the House in this election, which is essentially the same as the 221 seats in the House, with five seats still to be decided.
“Democrats did lose the majority in the Senate, but three of those four losses were in states Trump held in 2016, 2020, and 2024, and God knows Democrats lost the majority in Montana. It’s easy to conclude that it’s not meant to be a seat in the states, currently Ohio and West Virginia. The fourth one happened in Pennsylvania, which is clearly purple.
