If you thought the recent release of GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini kept OpenAI busy, think again: the release of a new LLM, codenamed “Strawberry,” may be just around the corner.
ChatGPT’s mobile app also had its best month ever. Why do people continue to flock to the app?
On Wednesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted a photo of a strawberry patch to X with the cryptic caption, “Loving summer in the garden,” as seen below.
On the surface, you might think this is simply a gratitude post for a healthy summer activity, but like most of Sam Altman’s cryptic tweets, this is more likely an Easter egg pointing to something bigger: The Strawberry Project.
AI enthusiasts quickly took to the comments section to try to decipher the post. user I counted the strawberries in the picture, which was a total of five, and linked it to the possible release of GPT-5, but most others came to the same conclusion and saw the post as confirmation of Project Strawberry’s release this summer.
Here’s everything we know about Project Strawberry and what to expect.
In May, Reuters OpenAI internal documents An internal document showing OpenAI working on a project codenamed “Strawberry,” which it described as a model with advanced reasoning capabilities that could be used for deep research by autonomously and reliably navigating the internet.

This project is the same as the Q*, a new model under development that began to be rumored in November 2023. Reuters reported. Some OpenAI employees considered Q* a breakthrough in artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Reuters’ report doesn’t say anything about when the model will be released, but new developments in addition to Sam AltmanX’s post above have sparked speculation that the launch may be closer than expected.
The model’s appearance in the arena is particularly noteworthy because OpenAI previously tested GPT-4o in the LMSYS Chatbot Arena for two weeks before releasing it to the public under an equally vague name. Sam Altman also alluded to the model in an X post at the time. If Strawberry follows this pattern, a release could be coming soon.
There’s no guarantee that this mysterious model is Strawberry, but if you want to give it a try, head over to the website, click on Arena battle, and enter the sample prompts until you see “anonymous-chatbot.” Shared by Reddit user They “spent an hour or two on Arena testing an ‘anonymous chatbot,'” so proceed with caution.
