How to use progesterone
Before considering the use of progesterone, be aware that progesterone is not a silver bullet, and that the greatest benefit comes from implementing a bioenergetic dietary approach that allows you to effectively burn glucose as your primary fuel without backing up electrons in your mitochondria. It is important to understand that you can get It reduces energy production. My new book, A Guide to Cellular Health: Uncovering the Science of Longevity and Joy, will be published soon and explains this process in detail.
Once you have adjusted your diet, an effective strategy to combat excess estrogen is to take transmucosal progesterone, a natural estrogen antagonist (i.e., applied to the gums rather than orally or transdermally). Progesterone is one of only four hormones that many adults can benefit from. (The remaining three are the thyroid hormone T3, DHEA, and pregnenolone.)
The skin expresses high levels of the 5-α-reductase enzyme, which causes a significant portion of the ingested progesterone to be irreversibly converted primarily to allopregnanolone and cannot be converted back to progesterone. Transdermal progesterone is not recommended.
The ideal way to administer progesterone
When progesterone is used transmucosally into the gums, as I advise, the FDA considers it to somehow convert into a drug and prohibits any company from stating that on the label. Please note that there are This is why companies like Health Natura promote their progesterone products as “hot”.
However, please understand that it is completely legal for doctors to recommend off-label medications to their patients. In this case, progesterone is not a drug but a natural hormone and is very safe even in high doses. This is different from the synthetic progesterone called progestin used by pharmaceutical companies, but often incorrectly referred to.
Dr. Ray Peat did seminal research on progesterone and was probably the world’s greatest expert on progesterone. He wrote a Ph.D. I began researching estrogen in 1982 and spent most of my professional career documenting the need to counteract the dangers of excess estrogen with a low LA diet and transmucosal progesterone supplementation.
He determined that most solvents do not dissolve progesterone well and found that vitamin E was the best solvent to optimally deliver progesterone to tissues. Vitamin E also protects against LA damage. You should be very careful about which vitamin E you use, as most supplements vitamin E on the market do more harm than good and do more harm than good.
Avoid using synthetic vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol acetate – acetate indicates synthetic) at all costs. Natural vitamin E is labeled as “dα tocopherol.” This is the pure D isomer and is the one your body can use.
There are other vitamin E isomers and the full spectrum of tocopherols and tocotrienols of the active D isomer is required, especially the beta, gamma, and delta types. For an example of the ideal vitamin E, take a look at our vitamin E label. You can use any brand with a similar label.
Pharmaceutical grade bioidentical progesterone can be purchased as progesterone powder, bioidentical micronized powder, 10 grams, for about $40 at many online stores, including Amazon. Depending on the dose chosen, this is equivalent to almost a year’s supply.
However, you will need 1/64 teaspoon (25 mg) and 1/32 teaspoon (50 mg), so you will need to purchase a small stainless steel measuring spoon. The usual dose is usually 25-50 mg and is taken 30 minutes before bedtime as it has anti-cortisol properties and increases GABA levels to promote a restful night’s sleep.
Unfortunately, this vendor frequently runs out of products. In that case, you can use Health Natura’s Simply Progesterone. Premixed with vitamin E and MCT oil. Again, although Health Natura states that the product is for “topical use only,” I recommend applying it transmucosally by rubbing it into the gums.
Women who menstruate should take progesterone during the luteal phase or the second half of the cycle. This can be determined by starting 10 days after the first day of menstruation and discontinuing progesterone when menstruation begins.
If you are a man or a woman who does not menstruate, you can take progesterone daily for 4 to 6 months, then take a week off. The best time to take progesterone is 30 minutes before bedtime, as it has anti-cortisol properties and increases GABA levels, promoting a restful night’s sleep.
This is something I’ve personally been working on for over a year now with very good results. I’m a doctor so I have no problem doing this. Transmucosal progesterone therapy requires a doctor’s prescription, so if you are not a doctor, you should consult your doctor before using this therapy.
