There’s nothing worse than showing up to the gym and leaving feeling a little disheartened. Sometimes you show up ready and fired up, only to end up with a workout that’s just so-so rather than awesome.
Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there: Every time you step into a lift you feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders (literally), and all you want to do is go home and slack off.
But it’s time to say goodbye to boring workouts. Here’s how to get out of your workout slump and start feeling your best again.
First, understand the why
Sometimes life gets in the way—hormonal fluctuations, dietary changes, sleep factors—and we’re not sure why, but it happens and it’s totally normal.
Naturally, your body will react to these changes, which also means that it won’t always be in your favor. Sometimes you’ll wake up feeling super energized and ready to hit the gym, and other times you won’t.
The thing is, while some of these factors may be out of your control, there is one thing you can do: try your best. Give it your all, and it doesn’t matter if it’s 70% or 100%.
Now, other than giving it your all, what else can you do to combat bad training days?
1. Set daily goals without expectations
When we don’t achieve our goals, we tend to feel like we’ve “failed,” so the easiest way to avoid that situation is to avoid thinking about a day full of goals and instead set intentions. Setting intentions allows us to remain open and adaptable.

Don’t be afraid to write down your daily goals and carry them with you. You can refer to them throughout the day and feel more motivated. If your daily goal is to do your best, you will achieve it.
2. Reach out to a trusted friend
We need to surround ourselves with great people, so when you feel like you’re doing your best but your training is still a bit lacking, reach out to a trusted friend for advice.
Talking to someone who understands how you feel can really help you talk things through and realize that you are truly doing the best you can. Find friends who are encouraging and empowering.
3. Find a training buddy
We all have days when we don’t feel like exercising, but having a friend to exercise with and hold you accountable can really help keep you motivated.
Be sure to ask an understanding friend to help you, so you can set intentions together and realize your potential, even when you’re both feeling less than motivated.
4. Practice gratitude
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking negatively about parts of our lives, including our fitness, but gratitude is so powerful that by practicing it, you can train your brain to look for the positives instead.

An easy way to get started is to keep a journal or create an Instagram account dedicated to your goals. You can then use this as a place to highlight the things you’re grateful for, so you can process the not-so-great days and feel productive.
