A top Trump campaign volunteer in Massachusetts sent an email on Sunday evening warning that “the campaign has determined that New Hampshire is no longer a battleground state” and urged supporters to focus their efforts on Pennsylvania instead, but then backed off.
“The campaign has determined that New Hampshire is no longer a battleground state,” Tom Mountain, Trump’s deputy chairman in Massachusetts, wrote, advising supporters to focus on Pennsylvania instead. The Boston Globe It was reported exclusively.
“With the Democratic campaign revamp from Biden to Harris, our campaign has shifted strategy to other winnable battleground states,” Mountain wrote in an email to Trump volunteers in the state. “So for those of you who were actively involved in the ground campaign in New Hampshire in 2016 and 2020 and plan to do the same after Labor Day, the simple question is… what should we do?” Mountain wrote. “Go to Pennsylvania. It’s the closest battleground state. It’s a must-win state. If we lose Pennsylvania, we lose the election.”
“Trump,” Mountain said in an email.
Citing “election data and research,” he said Trump is “certain to lose by an even larger margin” in New Hampshire than he did in 2016 or 2020. He claimed funding had been suspended and the campaign would not send any high-profile surrogates, including Trump or his son. The email was obtained by the Globe and confirmed by multiple recipients.
538 As of September 2nd, Kamala Harris is at +7 in New Hampshire.
Mountain serves as Trump’s vice chairman in Massachusetts, but after his emails were sent, a senior Trump campaign adviser said he would “no longer be involved in any part of the campaign.”
The Trump campaign has tried to allay concerns raised by Mountain by arguing that his emails are not true, that he is merely a volunteer and has no knowledge of the campaign’s data or strategy.
They say they are based in New Hampshire, but the Globe points out that the RNC did not respond to questions about its plans for campaigning in New Hampshire or what resources, if any, it is sending there, and points out that while Kamala Harris is campaigning in New Hampshire, the RNC is campaigning in New Hampshire. It was the first time in months that a senior acting official like North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum visited the state in April.
As of July 31, Emerson College Poll/WHDH A survey of New Hampshire voters found that “50% of voters support Vice President Kamala Harris and 46% support former President Donald Trump. 4% of voters are undecided. When undecided voters are asked which candidate they support, Harris’ support rises to 52% and Trump’s support rises to 48%. When third-party candidates are on the ballot, Harris’ support is 48% to 41% over Trump, Robert Kennedy Jr.’s support is 6%, and Jill Stein’s support is 1%.”
The numbers shed light on Mountain’s emails, lending them credibility and context. Attention will be focused on whether the Trump campaign will send a high-profile surrogate and whether the Republican National Committee will provide funding to the state.
