Electric cargo bikes come in two configurations. The first is a front loader bike, also known as a Bakufeet or long john, which suspends a luggage box between the rider and the front wheel. Another layout is the midtail or longtail, which extends the rear end of the bike to accommodate more body and gear.
Both shapes have advantages and disadvantages. We found that larger riders were more likely to want a front loader bike that could not only carry their children, but also double as a large box for garden equipment, tools, etc. However, you will need a garage or storage space and a very good and reliable locking system. If you need to go over curbs or uneven terrain, it will be harder to maneuver and even heavier. Also, it doesn’t feel particularly stable at low speeds.
Smaller or lighter people may prefer a midtail or longtail, which allows them to maneuver like a regular bike. However, the weight is suspended so high on the rear end that some people may be worried about dropping it. I have a longtail. I prefer the mobility, but securing everything to racks and panniers can be a pain. If possible, we recommend making an appointment at your local bike shop and trying out several models before purchasing.
