For Jacqueline Sienna India’s clients, money is not an issue.
she Sienna Charlesis a members-only travel agency catering to affluent clients who spend millions on trips around the world.
But India says she often advises her clients that even if they had unlimited funds, not all spending sprees will last.
If you’ve been saving up for an expensive trip or are thinking of splurging on a few things on your next vacation, here are two expenses in India that aren’t necessarily worth the money and one that is.
Not worth the splurge: The most expensive hotel suite
If you don’t mind spending on accommodation, a high price for a luxury penthouse doesn’t necessarily translate to a good stay.
Think of it this way, India told CNBC Make It: “The majority of hotels are made up of standard rooms, but a small percentage are considered ‘trophy suites’ that don’t get booked often because they cost extra.”
Hotel staff may not be as knowledgeable about maintaining these suites because they don’t rotate them often.
“Maybe the hotel has forgotten about the service or they don’t have the right staff to enhance the quality of the service,” India says, “So, I don’t always recommend booking the top floor suite just because it seems the most luxurious. The hotel might just not have the dedicated staff to give you that special attention.”
If you still want to have a great hotel experience, India says, consider booking the suite that matches your desired amenities, rather than simply the most expensive one. In general, when it comes to spending, “the most expensive suite isn’t necessarily the best unless you understand what the hotel is offering and how it aligns with what you’re looking for,” she adds.
Not worth the splurge: Older hotels
In India, he said, people should consider “trying out a new hotel in their neighborhood” to get value.
In the big cities where India helps her clients travel – Paris, New York and London – “I always encourage them to try new hotels because they are the ones wanting to prove themselves and gain customers.”
Think: attentive service, extra bonus offers, and maybe even discount packages.
On the other hand, older, established hotels “may not need to acquire customers because they already have repeat customers and know their place in the market,” India says.
Worth Splurge: Concert and Event Hospitality Packages
Americans are willing to pay Concerts, Events and Other Performances: Resale prices for 2023 concert tickets are up 95% compared to 2019.
While ticket prices are high, India says it’s worth upgrading to VIP or other all-inclusive hospitality packages for the best experience.
“I always [people] “Choose a hospitality package that includes some kind of food and beverage, some kind of private entrance and some kind of parking,” she says.
For concerts or one-off events (as opposed to, say, an artist performing in Las Vegas), this makes the biggest difference because “these events are happening for the first time,” India said. Each event may be set up differently in terms of available entrances, exits, seating arrangements, and hospitality areas. “So because these venues are only built once, nobody can tell you where the entrance is or where the car service is going to drop you off.”
She recalls instances where customers had paid thousands of dollars only to have to wait in line for hours to get into a venue.
“Nobody wants to spend $10,000 on Taylor Swift tickets and then stand in line for two hours like everyone else,” she says.
It ends up saving you time. “If I have to spend a little bit of money to check, [access]I think that’s really important.”
