In the past, the warnings coming from historians, experts on tyranny, and the Biden-Harris campaign may have been mere fantasy, but today we face a very real threat in the form of a perfect storm.

3. We are living in an era of billionaire corporations taking over the media, from local papers to major newspapers that were once read with respect. One of them, in an act too blatant to be fiction, has installed a team led by a former Murdoch figure in the UK who has been accused of covering up the Conservative Party and hiding editorial misconduct. Instead of upholding America’s values of an independent and free press, some of the country’s major corporate media institutions are moving in the opposite direction.
Independent news sites like PoliticusUSA have been under attack for the past seven years, with site after site being shut down. Even sites funded by dark money and hedge funds have struggled, but we refuse to accept either. We started this site because we want to inform voters about the issues from a national perspective, with a focus on the impact of policies on working families, not Wall Street.
In the age of social media, it was easy to reach voters, but today, most of those avenues have been hijacked by corporations and big-money media. Things change. We are lucky to still have loyal readers, but with so many changes happening behind the scenes in Google Search, Google Ads payments sometimes being cut by up to 75% without notice, SEO writing and AI writing being rewarded, Net Neutrality ending under Trump, and corporate media teaming up with social media billionaires to own the “news” space, this is a business that cannot stand on its own. We have sustained this with our own money. This is our way of defending this democracy and its institutions.
