Texas Tech defeated No. 11 Iowa State 23-22 on Saturday in Ames, Iowa, on a fourth-quarter comeback led by quarterback Behren Morton.
Taj Brooks crossed the goal line for the winning touchdown for the Red Raiders (6-3, 4-2) with 19 seconds left, capping a 12-play, 71-yard drive. As Morton lined up as a receiver on a second-and-goal play, Brooks caught the direct snap and ran into the right side of the end zone.
Morton completed 21-of-40 passes for 237 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Both touchdown passes went to Josh Kelly, who had 127 receiving yards on eight receptions.
The Cyclones (7-1, 4-1) were undefeated and averaging 25.1 penalty yards per game entering the day, but committed eight penalties and gained 59 yards in the half, resulting in their first loss. I smoked it.
Morton was intercepted by Jontez Williams for one penalty, but a foul hand on the face flag by Tyler Onyedim kept the ball in Red Raiders hands. Moten led Texas Tech with nine more plays on the drive, which ended with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Kelly.
Still, Iowa State appeared to have made its second consecutive fourth-quarter comeback when Rocco Becht found Carson Brown for a 44-yard touchdown with 2:11 left in the game. However, Texas Tech still had plenty of time to mount a successful two-minute attack.
After Texas Tech’s winning shot, Iowa State had a chance to get into field goal range and take the winning kick. On the final play, the Cyclones attempted to continue the game with a lateral after the clock expired, but were unable to make the play, giving the Red Raiders the victory.
Becht passed for 299 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Jayden Higgins was Iowa State’s top receiver on the day, catching 10 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown.
