MANILA, Philippines — Despite losing his debut match in Manila, U.S. libero Eric Shoji felt the love of the Filipino fans, whom he considers “the nicest people in the world.”
The United States’ efforts were for naught as they were thwarted by Iran’s 26-28, 25-23, 25-18, 26-28, 15-13 comeback victory in Week 3 of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday night.
But the American libero was grateful for the cheers and warmth of the Filipinos, even as their chances of making the Final Eight seemed to be fading.

“We love them. It’s late at night but they’re the best. Salamat, to all our Filipino fans, you’ll see them soon,” Shoji said.
“I know the Filipino fans love volleyball, so I really appreciate them coming and supporting us. I’m from Honolulu, so I’m happy to be here and it’s been a great experience so far.”
Even after the loss, Shoji, Micah Christenson and other Americans stopped by the fan zone to meet with Filipinos.

Shoji also praised the hospitality of the Philippines, which has hosted the VNL for the third consecutive year.
“They’re looking after us really well, the people are very kind, very accommodating. I think they’re the nicest people in the world,” said the 34-year-old Rivero. “I’m really happy to be here for the first time. I think it’s a new experience for almost everyone, but so far it’s been good, apart from that game.”
Shoji and the U.S. team won’t have time to dwell on the loss to Iran, as they take on Brazil on Thursday night.
“We have to learn from this game and move forward. It’s always a good game against Brazil,” Shoji said. “Obviously, I think there were ups and downs. We wanted to win today, we wanted to play a little better, we wanted to be a little crisper. Iran played really well. They always play well against us. It was disappointing that we lost in the end.”
The United States, which has qualified for the Olympics, is currently in 12th place with three wins and six losses.
