I never thought I’d cry while playing this and it’s hard not to compare it to Playdate’s $6 climbing platform game. Scream in frustration? Yes. Run away from the game and crawl back in a few minutes? Sure. Get emotional? Not really. But here we are, an hour and 34 minutes later and 432 dead. This is the second…
in SummitIn , you are a cloaked climber, guided by an unseen narrator who calls you “little brother,” on your quest to reach the top of a mountain. You have an ice axe to help you scale the vertical faces, and later other equipment will come in handy in more challenging situations. Completing the 70 or so levels requires absolute precision and can be very, very challenging at times. very It’s frustrating. There are sharp thorns everywhere, some of which fall from great heights. The icy surface is slippery in places and can blow you away. Strong winds make it seem impossible to move forward.
It’s not impossible, of course, and in some cases you can use the environmental conditions to your advantage, making it all the more satisfying when you finally beat a particularly difficult level. Summit As well as just making well-timed jumps, you’ll use the D-pad, buttons and crank to coordinate a variety of actions to cross large gaps, avoid obstacles and at one point even ride a crow.
The music is beautiful throughout, with a reflective atmosphere that perfectly accompanies the game’s unexpected emotional twist at the end. As you approach the top, bits and pieces of the backstory are finally revealed, bringing you to tears. I was in tears, but not from relief at finally reaching the top (I was). I was searching Reddit to see what other people were doing and I felt the same way.
Summit Dying repeatedly and trying to move forward will test your resolve, but it’s never boring. Celeste, This is definitely worth checking out.
