At this point, there’s nothing stopping Disney from taking Star Wars in the same direction as DC, and this direction may finally calm some of the more rabid elements of the fandom. For example, some fans Acolyte People have even threatened to quit the fandom entirely over something as minor as Ki-Adi-Mundi’s age being retroactive. I will always remain skeptical of whether these are genuine opinions and not just opinions repeated on YouTube, but it is true that Disney makes these lore controversies a non-issue by releasing movies and shows that purposefully do not follow the canon.
In theory, what benefit could Star Wars gain from copying DC’s formula, other than slowing the culture wars? Simply put, filmmakers and showrunners could create their own universe where they could borrow, ignore, or remix as much of the existing canon as they like. Countless fans would love to wish the sequel trilogy never existed, and this could be the perfect compromise, allowing for future stories where Rey and Kylo Ren don’t exist.
