Lando Norris took the lead in the only practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix after title rival Max Verstappen was confirmed to receive a grid penalty for Sunday’s race in Brazil.
Norris set a lap of 1 minute 10.610 seconds in the final stages of the session, beating Mercedes’ George Russell by nearly two-tenths of a second and giving the McLaren driver hope ahead of sprint qualifying at Interlagos later on Friday. Ta.
Verstappen, who leads Norris in the drivers’ championship by 47 points with four races remaining in the season, aborted his only attempt at a flying lap on soft tires and finished 15th.
As expected, confirmation that Red Bull had installed a new engine in Verstappen’s car came during the session, resulting in a five-place grid penalty on Sunday.
Oliver Bearman will compete in both sprint sessions in place of the Dane, impressed by Haas’s British one-two-three after being a short-notice substitute for the unwell Kevin Magnussen. It’s planned.
Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri emphasized McLaren’s strength with their fourth place finish, but the rapid changes in position suggested the timesheets needed to be viewed with some caution.
Williams’ Alex Albon finished fifth ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, winning each of the last two races to bring the Italian team within 29 points of leading the constructors’ championship, McLaren. .
Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton finished 16th after opting not to use any soft tires during the session, while Verstappen’s struggling teammate Sergio Perez finished 16th despite running on the fastest tire compound. It was 19th place.
