Willy Abreu had two hits, one RBI and a double, and the Boston Red Sox took advantage of 10 walks to beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-1, on Monday night.
Boston right-hander Tanner Hoke (9-10) pitched five scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk in the first game of the three-game series.
The Red Sox (79-78) have won three straight and the Blue Jays (73-84) have lost four straight. Boston leads this season’s series 7-4.
Toronto right-hander Chris Bassitt (10-14) pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, seven walks and three runs (two earned) while striking out two.
Boston scored one unearned run in the second inning. Abreu walked and advanced to second when Connor Wong advanced to first on an error by first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He advanced to third on Nick Sogard’s fielder’s choice grounder to second and scored on Vaughn Grissom’s sacrifice fly to left.
The Red Sox added one more run in the third inning when Triston Casas and Tyler O’Neill each walked with two outs and Abreu hit a one-run double to right field.
Leading 3-0 in the fourth inning, Sogard hit a double, advanced to third on a balk and scored on Sedan Raffaella’s grounder to Bassitt.
In the fifth inning, Casas walked and advanced to third on an Abreu single, then Zach Popp replaced Bassitt. Wong walked and the inning ended with a double play on a grounder by Sogard.
In the fifth inning, Addison Berger walked with two outs to put a runner on first for the Blue Jays, then Ernie Clement singled to left field and Jonathan Kreis followed with a fly to left field.
Greg Weisert took the mound for Hack and gave up two singles in the sixth inning, thanks to a double play.
Boston got one run in the eighth off Dillon Tate, who reached base on a walk, stole second and scored on a fielder’s choice grounder by Rafaela.
Boston’s fifth pitcher of the day, Chris Martin, allowed a leadoff single to Nathan Rooks in the ninth inning, but Rooks then scored on a Spencer Horowitz single with one out.
Boston placed right-hander Kenley Jansen (shoulder) on the disabled list on Monday and recalled right-hander Chase Shugart from Triple-A Worcester.
