Proton’s password manager is slowly catching up to rivals like 1Password. The company, originally known for its encrypted email and VPN services, added biometric authentication to its Proton Pass app when it rolled out of beta earlier this year. The feature works with Touch ID on macOS and Windows Hello on Microsoft’s desktop operating system.
Like many other services, biometric authentication allows Proton Pass users to quickly unlock security apps with their fingerprint or face without having to enter a login password every time. However, it is not available to free users; only users on the Pass Plus plan (and above) can access it. The minimum plan cost It costs $23.88 per year, or $4.99 if you pay monthly.
Proton is expanding its password manager to include ID, which allows you to auto-fill contact information into forms with one click. Like biometrics, this kind of functionality has been seen many times in competing products. Still, this (along with the recently added dark web search) shows that Proton is committed to building a crypto-focused password manager, which it initially launched as a beta in early 2023.
Unlike biometric login, ID is available to free users as well as those with paid plans.
“With the introduction of ID and biometric authentication, Proton Pass will significantly improve our users’ productivity,” said Son Nguyen Kim, product lead at Proton Pass. “These features not only strengthen our security services, but also streamline everyday tasks, helping our users save time and reduce stress in managing their digital lives.”
The new features are available starting today in the Proton Pass app for Windows and Mac.
