Many years ago I shared my experience with remineralizing my teeth. Since then, I’ve received hundreds of questions about my oral care habits. Although I’m no longer actively working to reverse cavities, I continue to follow these habits to keep my teeth healthy.
If you’re new to the concept of remineralization, this article goes into detail about whether or not teeth can be remineralized (yes!), and you might also find the interview with a dentist about the body’s ability to remineralize teeth helpful.
Good oral hygiene can prevent problems like tooth decay, bad breath, gingivitis, and even oral cancer. Dental health also directly impacts the overall health and wellness of the rest of your body. Dental health can contribute to infertility, pregnancy complications, heart disease, and more. Taking care of your mouth is very important.
In addition to focusing on proper dental care, I support oral health through diet and lifestyle. Guests on this podcast discuss how oral health is about more than just brushing and flossing. Using natural oral care products (rather than conventional products) is also important for healthy teeth and dental hygiene.
My daily oral hygiene routine
This is the oral care routine I do every day to keep my mouth healthy. Years ago this method helped me to remineralize my teeth. Now I use it to prevent new cavities. Dental care is important for remineralizing teeth and preventing cavities.
morning
- Oil Pulling – As soon as you wake up, add coconut oil and a few drops Wellness Balanced Mouth BlendRinse your mouth for 15-20 minutes, then spit it into the trash can and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Do not swallow the oil to avoid introducing oral bacteria into your body. For me, this oil really helped to eliminate plaque and tartar buildup.
- Mouthwash – If you don’t have time to oil pull, mix a few drops of Mouth Blend with water and use as a mouthwash. It’s a great alternative to traditional mouthwash.
- Brush – I then brush my teeth with a homemade remineralizing paste or toothpaste. I also use a Wellness Bamboo Toothbrush with stiff bristles. Dentists often recommend brushing your teeth daily with a soft-bristled brush, but I think stiffer bristles clean the surfaces of your teeth better. If you don’t have time to make your own toothpaste at home, try Wellness Whitening Toothpaste, which contains hydroxyapatite, a mineral that makes up tooth enamel. It’s fluoride-free and is a formula I developed after years of making my own toothpaste.
- supplement – I take This vitamin K2-7It helps deliver calcium to bones and teeth. magnesium A supplement used in over 600 functions in the body that are extremely important to your health.
- Probiotics – In the morning, take a probiotic to support your gut health and overall health. Also, Wellness Oral Microbiome ProbioticsIt helps to balance the good and bad bacteria in your mouth.
Daytime
- Hydration – An alkaline pH level is necessary for oral health. Drinking water increases saliva production, which helps keep the pH level alkaline. 2013 Study I’ve found that people with higher pH levels have worse gingivitis than those with more alkaline pH levels. I drink half my body weight in filtered water.
- Vitamin D – This is one of the most important vitamins for dental health, and the best way to boost your vitamin D is from the sun. In addition to getting outside for 10-15 minutes at sunrise and sunset, I try to get 20-30 minutes of sunlight during the day.
evening
- Floss – I use Wellnesse Peppermint Silk Floss to remove all food particles and eliminate plaque, which helps prevent gum diseases such as gingivitis.
- Brush – After flossing, brush your teeth again. If you want to whiten your teeth, brush with activated charcoal a few times a week. It works wonders! You can also use Wellnesse charcoal toothpaste. I often use the Bass brushing method.
- Tongue scraping – This is a popular Ayurvedic practice where you literally scrape your tongue to get rid of bacteria. I do this once a day to get rid of any buildup on my tongue and keep my mouth healthy. Wellness Tongue Cleaner Made from copper, which is antibacterial and durable.
- Bedtime – My bedtime is 10-10:30pm for maximum restorative sleep and optimal hormone secretion. I spray myself with magnesium spray to improve the quality of my sleep. Having trouble sleeping? These handy hacks To fall asleep.
Oral Hygiene Diet
I try to eat a balanced diet of protein, fat and vegetables every day, and believe it or not, diet is a big factor in remineralizing teeth.
Getting enough fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and minerals is important, so I focus on healthy fats and vegetables. Getting enough protein is important, because collagen is the building block of our bodies. I aim for one ounce of protein per pound of body weight (or ideal body weight). I like to use protein and collagen powders.
It’s also important to limit your intake of phytic acid, which is found in grains, seeds, nuts and legumes. If you eat these foods, soak and dry them to reduce the amount of phytic acid in them.
Sample Diet
Here’s what I tried to eat each day to get the necessary amounts of vitamins, minerals, fats, and protein to maintain oral health: After taking a genetic test, I found out I carry the FTO gene and feel better with less saturated fat (though I still think it’s healthy), and while everyone needs different amounts, healthy fats and animal protein are still important.
- 3-4 eggs with vegetables and meat or a collagen-based protein shake. I also have a healthy coffee with good fats for breakfast.
- Eat healthy proteins like grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken, and wild-caught salmon at every meal
- 2 cups total of homemade bone broth for lunch and dinner (No time to make bone broth at home? This is my go-to organic, grass-fed broth).
- 4-6 cups of vegetables, usually with soup or meat, and I try to eat plenty of leafy greens and brightly colored vegetables.
- 2 to 4 tablespoons coconut oil
- 2 or more tablespoons of grass-fed butter
- Coconut-based snacks like coconut cream
- Other healthy fats like avocado, beef fat for cooking, and olive oil for salads
The Difference Between Natural Oral Care Products
Conventional oral care products are full of harmful chemicals like fluoride, BPA, sodium lauryl sulfate, and phthalates. I also only use natural products on my teeth and gums. This has made a huge difference for me. After switching to natural oral care products, I realized there was something in the conventional products that was causing the gum inflammation that I’ve been suffering from ever since I got braces as a teenager.
If you’d like to try making your own, I’ve come up with many great recipes over the years. In addition to the recipes above, I also have a recipe for a natural toothpaste and a squeezable toothpaste, as well as a recipe for making your own herbal mouthwash.
