Filmmakers love New Zealand. The landscape reminds us of another world and explains why so much of The Lord of the Rings was filmed there.
The country is home to everything from long subtropical sandy beaches to active volcanoes.
The country’s otherworldly nature extends to the atmosphere, and when the conditions are right, a cloud called “Tayeripet” can form.
of Taieri pet Lenticular clouds are stationary clouds that form under certain circumstances. They form in the troposphere when wind blows over an obstacle, usually a mountain range.
There are three types: altocumulus standing lenticular (ACSL), stratocumulus standing lenticular (SCSL), and cirrocumulus standing lenticular (CCSL). Each type forms at different altitudes.
When the wind rises over an obstacle, a low pressure system forms on the leeward side.
When the wind moves, standing waves occur. If conditions are right, these waves become visible as the moisture condenses.
The Taieri Pet is formed atop the New Zealand Rock and Pillar Mountains in the Strath Taieri region of Otago, New Zealand’s South Island.
Clouds are often seen near the town of Middlemarch. It dates back to the 1890s and has been mentioned in newspapers. Locals sometimes took the appearance of Taieri pets as a sign of an approaching storm.
Landsat 8’s Operational Land Image (OLI) captured this amazing image of Taieri Pet in September.
Landsat 8 follows a polar orbit that allows it to observe the entire surface of the Earth every 16 days.
Landsat satellites have been monitoring the Earth for more than 50 years from an orbit 705 km above the Earth.
These images and data are widely used by scientists, but they are also beautiful portraits of the incredible planets that once existed in our solar system.
We’ve found a Landsat Gallery for everyone to enjoy here.
