Drummer Marcus Gilmore has been subtly shaping the heart beat of recent jazz since he was a teen. Now in his late 30s, his shapeshifting mastery of his instrument has made him one of the sought-after percussionists within the area.

The late legend Chick Corea recruited his companies, as did different innovators of the previous few many years equivalent to Steve Coleman, Vijay Iyer and Ambrose Akinmusire. When Gilmore picks up the sticks, individuals listen.

So it was a milestone for Gilmore when, in Might, he launched his first recording as a frontrunner: Journey to the New, recorded on the historic Village Vanguard.

It is smart for this event to happen on the Vanguard. His grandfather, the late Roy Haynes, is without doubt one of the most influential drummers of all time. Haynes was a frequent presence on that stage, notably featured in John Coltrane’s landmark 1961 Village Vanguard classes.

On this episode, Gilmore sits down with Christian McBride to speak about his connection to the Vanguard, together with the second when his grandfather as soon as invited him to the hallowed stage.
