Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters Wednesday that FEMA does not have enough funds to get through the rest of this year, even though it has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on migrants under the Biden administration. He said there was a possibility of more hurricanes hitting the area.
DHS oversees FEMA, putting Mr. Mayorkas in charge of the emergency relief agency, which has recently focused on helping immigrants settle in the United States.
“We are meeting immediate needs with the funds we have,” Mayorkas told reporters. “We’re expecting another hurricane. FEMA doesn’t have the funds to get us through the season.”

Mr. Mayorkas’ surprising confession comes as FEMA said the widespread destruction of Hurricane Helen, a Category 4 hurricane that tore through the Southeast and caused billions of dollars in damage, widespread infrastructure damage, food shortages, and more than 100 deaths. The announcement was made while efforts were being made to address the damage. Many people are still missing.
President Joe Biden said earlier this week that he may ask Congress to pass additional funding for FEMA.
In April of this year, FEMA announced $640 million in new funding, $300 million in “direct funds” to help immigrants settle in the U.S., and the remaining $340 million going to cities through grants for the same purpose.
“Last year, more than $780 million was awarded through the SSP and Emergency Food and Shelter Program humanitarian awards to organizations and cities across the country,” FEMA said in a statement.
Although funding is appropriated by Congress and allows for flexibility in funneling funds through FEMA from other internal sources, Mayorkas’ comments still leave FEMA’s resources unprepared for this deadly hurricane season and the need for migrants to move in. It shows that you are concentrating on.

Illegal immigration has surged under the Biden-Harris administration, with millions entering the United States, overwhelming the federal government’s capacity to handle the millions of illegal immigrants crossing the southern border.
At least 12 million illegal immigrants have entered the United States under the Biden-Harris administration, but many experts estimate that number is actually much higher.
Hurricane season is expected to last until the end of November.
