The premium off-road electric vehicle racing series Extreme E is pivoting to hydrogen. The series rebranded this week as And to spearhead the transition, the company unveiled a hydrogen-powered race car called the Pioneer 25. The first season is scheduled to begin in April 2025 in Saudi Arabia, before moving on to the UK, Germany, Italy and finishing in the US.
Extreme E is an event that tests electric off-road vehicles in extreme environments, such as the desert (naturally). The event attracts some of the biggest teams. This year marks the fourth season of Extreme E. Speaking about the shift to hydrogen, founder and CEO Alejandro Agag said the move was “not just about e-mobility, but about creating green power solutions that can be applied anywhere, from remote areas to bustling cities.”
“With the launch of the Extreme H, we will not only demonstrate the viability of hydrogen as a fuel source, but also test the broader hydrogen ecosystem, including hydrogen charging and transportation, and contribute to creating a hydrogen market,” Agag wrote. Extreme H’s flagship race car, the Pioneer 25, is powered by a 75kW hydrogen fuel cell.
