Elle Macpherson She opened up for the first time about being diagnosed with breast cancer more than seven years ago and rejecting conventional treatment.
The supermodel won’t undergo chemotherapy, she says in her upcoming autobiography, “Elle: Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself.” She’s opting for a holistic approach…upsetting her loved ones in the process.
Elle, who is now in remission, spoke about her unconventional choice while promoting her new book with Women’s Weekly, calling her intraductal carcinoma diagnosis a “shock.”
She says: “It was unexpected, confusing and daunting in many ways, but it gave me the opportunity to dig deep within myself to find a solution that works for me.”
According to Elle, she was advised to undergo a mastectomy with radiation, in addition to chemotherapy and hormone therapy.
The Australian model rejected chemotherapy and surgery as it seemed “too extreme”, choosing instead to pursue an “intuitive, heart-based, holistic approach”.
She added: “Saying no to the standard medical solutions was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but saying no to my own inner feelings would have been even harder.”
Elle says many people thought she was odd about her choice of path, including her son Flynn, but she says her son Sy didn’t want her to go through chemotherapy because he feared it would be “the kiss of death.”
Elle’s battle with cancer may have been non-traditional, but it seems to have worked for her.
