Growing, packaging, transporting and distributing food is a major source of emissions for society, accounting for around 26% of global annual emissions. Reducing the impact of food production is key to bringing society back within the planet’s limits, says Montreal-based Re-localizationRelocalize aims to “decarbonize and hyper-localize food and beverage manufacturing.” The company is developing technology and business strategies for decentralized food production, using automated microfactories set up near major consumer markets. In exchange for providing just 1,200 square feet of space for Relocalize’s operations, it promises retailers “full control of their supply chain.” The result, according to Relocalize, is up to 30% lower product costs, 90% lower CO2 emissions, and other operational cost savings by eliminating the need to transport food long distances.
