Dynasty Warriors Origins will be the tenth game in the series, following a long hiatus since its predecessor.
Dynasty Warriors 9 was released in 2018, but we had to wait until PlayStation’s State of Play 2024 event to hear rumors of the next game in the series.
The tenth installment in the series has been confirmed to be Dynasty Warriors: Origins, and judging by the trailer, it promises bigger battles than ever before.
“When the original Dynasty Warriors debuted in 1997, no one expected that 27 years later Koei Tecmo would release a shocking new installment in the series and bring Dynasty Warriors to the next generation of action gamers,” wrote Sho Tomohiko, producer of Dynasty Warriors Origins and head of Omega Force at Koei Tecmo Games. PlayStation blog post announcing upcoming games.
“Dynasty Warriors Origins introduces the largest army in the series’ history and introduces new heroes to the exhilarating 1 vs. 1,000 action that has made the franchise famous.”
Besides the trailer, several other details about the game are already known, including a release window and some early details about gameplay and content. Read on to find out more about Dynasty Warriors: Origins and when it will be released.
When is the new Dynasty Warriors game due for release?
The end of the trailer reveals that Dynasty Warriors: Origins is scheduled for release in 2025.
The exact date has yet to be revealed, but based on game developer Koei Tecmo Games’ usual release schedule, it’s likely to be released in the first half of this year.
This is in line with the fact that it was confirmed back in May, leaving a long but reasonable amount of time to get hopes up.
A late 2025 release date is likely too far away from May 2024, and maintaining momentum for the highly anticipated game seven years after the release of the series’ most recent entry could prove to be a tough task.
What platforms will Dynasty Warriors: Origins be released on?
This tense battlefield war game is available to play on PC via Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
In preparation for when pre-orders officially open, you can add the game to your wishlist on all three of these game stores, and you’ll be notified when pre-orders open, when the game becomes playable, or when the game goes on sale or is included in an upcoming bundle.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins Features and What to Expect
To be honest, not many details are known about the game yet, but generally speaking, we can expect bigger and better combat scenes than ever before.
Previous Dynasty Warriors games have thrived on their 1 vs 1000 combat, and judging just from the early artwork, it looks like that trend will continue.
But there’s a significant change in who that “one” will be: for the first time, Dynasty Warriors: Origins will feature an original character.
“We depict the turmoil of the Three Kingdoms through the eyes of an ‘unsung hero,'” Sho Tomohiko writes. “Play a historical war tale through the eyes of a new protagonist, introducing you to the vast Chinese mainland and soldiers and generals across the ages like never before!”
We already know what these “unsung heroes” look like, both facing off against hordes of enemies in battle and from the front in some early dramatic images: with huge swords strapped to their backs and black hair flowing in front of their eyes, they’re the very definition of warrior.
Typically, Dynasty Warriors games feature real historical figures, and the characters players meet will likely continue to do so in the future, but this will be the first time that a playable character will be “nameless” and set in the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history.
It’s worth noting that it’s still early days for the developers to promote the game, meaning more information may be revealed about who this “hero” is, or what other playable characters are.
Unlike previous Dynasty Warriors games, Origins is built for the latest high-performance consoles, which means we can expect a major graphical upgrade as well. More power means bigger, more detailed battles. While what we’ve seen in the trailers so far has been mostly cinematic rather than gameplay-based, what Tomohiko Sho promised as “the largest army in the series’ history” looks set to be delivered.
Presumably, this will be supplemented with new special moves and attacks, and the ability to face off against more powerful armies. Although Dynasty Warriors 9 only has a Metacritic score of 66, fans are still hopeful that the 10th installment in the series will help recapture the popularity of the series.
