Extinction Rebellion (XR) has written to UK-based insurance company executives urging them to end fossil fuel coverage.
The environmental campaign group sent the letter on Monday as preparations continued. A week of protests will take place in London and across the UK starting October 28th..
The letter asks insurance company leaders to “commit to divest from new oil, coal and gas or face action and protests.”

XR said members of the public will also join activists in targeting insurance companies through non-violent action in the City of London.
After three days of intensive action in the capital, the campaign will be expanded to target insurance company offices in towns and cities across the UK.
The letter read as follows: “Within 14 days from today, we need to make a public declaration that we will no longer insure all new fossil fuel projects.
“If you have not made such a declaration by October 28th, your business in the UK will be subject to widespread attack by thousands of XR activists and their allies during a week of action in London and across the UK. ” and in the weeks and months that followed. ”
This comes after XR targeted insurance companies in the City of London in February as part of Global Action Week, where dozens of actions took place in 27 cities around the world to highlight the insurance industry’s role in the climate crisis. This happened after similar protests were held.
anxiety
Many insurance companies make money by underwriting fossil fuel projects such as oil rigs and coal mines.
However, the industry also faces significant challenges from global warming, as the effects of global warming become increasingly severe, increasing liability risks and costs for certain types of insurance.
