That’s why Greenpeace Canada is seeking a new head of donor development and engagement.
As Head of Donor Development and Engagement for Greenpeace Canada, you will lead legacy giving, build and manage relationships with Greenpeace’s key supporters, and oversee our donor care team and processes – in doing so, increasing donor satisfaction and trust, building and strengthening our movement, and ensuring Greenpeace is a strong and effective voice for nature, peace and the planet.
The ideal candidate will be intrinsically motivated, emotionally intelligent, results-oriented and have 7+ years of experience in planned or mid-level giving, with at least 2 years of staff management experience. Candidates will also be knowledgeable about environmental issues and passionate about Greenpeace’s values and campaign tactics. Fluency in English is a must, and fluency in French is an added advantage.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement an annual operational plan for promoting bequests and mid-level gifts.
- Oversee the administration of the estate, secure expert advice where necessary and provide accurate reports and forecasts.
- Identify major donor prospects within your mid-level donor program and develop a major donor pipeline.
- Build strong relationships with donors and planned giving prospects through regular phone calls, customized communications, events, and in-person meetings.
- Identify potential planned giving donors and solicit bequests.
- Develop and implement strategies to maintain strong relationships with new and existing bequest donors and expand the existing network of professional estate planning advisors.
- Develop and execute a strategy to build a sense of community with donors and volunteers through virtual and in-person events.
- Manages the Fundraising and Planned Giving Manager and two donor care staff.Oversees hiring, provides orientation, training, direction and support, assigns work responsibilities, evaluates employee performance, determines training requirements and handles employee relations issues as needed.
- Develop, implement and maintain standard procedures and business rules for the management of Greenpeace Canada’s fundraising activities, including donation fulfillment and acknowledgements, donor service level agreements and donor Q&As.
- Manage relationships with Greenpeace Canada’s donation processing and fulfillment service providers. Develop and manage budgets for all related services.
- Participate in and contribute to relevant communities of practice.
Required skills and experience
- 7+ years of experience in planned giving, major gift fundraising, or sales, including donation solicitation and management
- 2+ years experience managing or supervising staff
- Excellent communication and presentation skills (verbal and written).
- Excellent relationship building skills with donors and colleagues.
- Experience working with vendors and related professionals (lawyers, financial planners, etc.)
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Experience managing projects, including using relevant software applications (e.g. Asana).
- Event planning experience
- Extensive experience with Raiser’s Edge or similar fundraising CRM.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and supporter/customer service orientation
- Deep knowledge and experience in effective fundraising and customer loyalty building strategies
- Extensive experience in strategy formulation, implementation, evaluation and budget management
- Ability to read and calculate financial statements.
- Comfort and ease in interpreting legal concepts and language.
- Ability to translate complex concepts and structures into simple, accessible English, both written and spoken.
- Strong emotional intelligence – the ability to read people and situations keenly and respond accordingly – as well as a high level of self-awareness and compassion
- Experience working with cross-functional teams.
- Oral and written proficiency in English is essential and proficiency in French will be a major advantage.
- Knowledge of First Nations, Inuit and/or Metis languages is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of other languages which reflect the diversity of Canada’s many communities is also highly desirable.
- General knowledge of environmental and social justice issues and knowledge of Greenpeace’s overall goals and intent
We work with colleagues across Canada and also with Greenpeace offices around the world.
Candidates should understand and support Greenpeace’s election tactics, including the use of peaceful civil disobedience.
