Destiny, the long-running sci-fi loot shooter from beloved studio Bungie, is coming to smartphones, but not from the same company. NetEase, the Chinese publisher and developer of various mobile games from Marvel and Blizzard, is developing a new game, Destiny: Rising. Players in the US and Canada Sign up for the closed alpha playtest November 1st.
The first trailer for Destiny: Rising shows that NetEase is following a similar approach to the successful Diablo Immortal game in adapting the core look and feel of the base game to a mobile-enabled game. approach is adopted. Combined with over-the-shoulder shooting that switches to first-person perspective when you aim your gun, it’s packed with Vex, Fallen, Hive, and other classic Destiny enemies.
Destiny: Rising is free to play and is set long before Destiny 2. In fact, it’s “a new take on Destiny set in an alternate world with its own timeline,” says Bungie creative lead Terry Redfield. Developer preview video. The developer partnered with NetEase to create a mobile version that brings Destiny’s sci-fi universe and loot-shooting vibe to a new audience. Siling the game into separate worlds seems intentional to free up development between NetEase’s game and Bungie’s Destiny 2.
Destiny: Rising’s timeline begins before the Last City exists and the Guardians emerge as peacekeepers, NetEase art director Alex Yan said in a developer video. It roughly takes place after the Dark Ages of the Destiny timeline, but we can see how it diverges from the existing Destiny timeline. The developers specifically mentioned the Ironlords and Warlords, regional powers that remained from that era until the newly formed Guardians brought them into line. Player-revived ghosts and near-magical light abilities will still be in the game.
How does the story differ from Destiny 2? Because it’s set in an older era, players don’t have the strict guidelines of the Guardians. This was before the Hunter, Titan, and Warlock classes. Players instead choose between specific pre-built characters with unique playstyles and backstories. But familiar faces will also be back.
Destiny: Rising will include missions, strikes, and six-player PvE activities inherited from Destiny 2, as well as unspecified new gameplay modes. Featuring new weapons and returning favorites — Sweet Business was briefly introduced in a developer video, but this concept art of the available weapons shows off things like the Huckleberry and Monte Carlo exotic weapons, as well as a new crossbow weapon. Something like is shown. Above Exotics there is also a new rarity called Mythic.
The Destiny: Rising team said the game is “still in a fairly early stage of development,” but the trailer shows all current in-game footage. There’s no word on the release schedule or when players will next be able to get their hands on the game, other than a closed alpha playtest taking place next month.
