David Warner has offered to come out of Test retirement to represent Australia if he still needs an opener for the five-match series against India starting next month.
The former Australia opening batsman retired from One-Day International and Test cricket at the Sydney Cricket Ground last summer, with 26 centuries and 112 Test appearances to his name.
In Warner’s absence, Steve Smith moved up in the starting batting order with Usman Khawaja, but will be moved down the order for the India series.
India have won the last four Test series against Australia and the hosts are looking for their first win since 2015, with the first Test starting in Perth on November 22.
“We’re always available. Just pick up the phone,” Warner said. news corporation
“I’m always serious. To be honest, the players have played one red-ball game.” [first round of the shield] Since the last test match in February, I have prepared almost the same way.
“Honestly, if they really wanted me for this series, I would be happy to go and play in the next Shield game.
“I retired for the right reason to finish the game and I wanted to finish the game. [But] If they are in dire need of someone, I will raise my hand. I’m not going to avoid it. ”
Smith is expected to bat at number four against India, but Australia are currently looking for a new opener as Cameron Green has been ruled out of the series due to a stress fracture in his lower back.
One option is 19-year-old prodigy Sam Constas, who scored a double century for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield opener earlier this month.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Cameron Bancroft and Matthew Renshaw have failed to reach triple figures in the opening five Shield games this summer, potentially leading the selectors to favor Warner.
Warner also said he had contacted men’s coach Andrew McDonald and chief selector George Bailey.
“I cheekily sent a message to both of them. I spoke to Torch (McDonald) and the answer he got back was ‘you’re retired’,” he added.
“I don’t think he wants me to be happy and say, ‘Will you come back?’”
Warner believes Marnus Labuschagne or Nathan McSweeney could also be potential candidates for Australia’s opening position.
“My opinion is that I liked what they were thinking about last year in terms of the fact that it was a greenie.” [Cameron Green] It’s in the top 6 best [so make the positions work around that].
“It doesn’t necessarily have to be an opener. I think there could be someone else who could step in third at bat and be the opener for Marnus.
“I’m Nathan McSweeney. [37 and 72 for South Australia] Are there enough players to come in and bat third? ”
