Kathy Hannun, president and co-founder of Dandelion Energy, introduces geothermal energy, an untapped source of heating and cooling capacity for residential homes. Typically associated with hot, geologically active areas like hot springs or plate intersections, geothermal heat pumps harness the year-round consistent temperatures of the Earth’s outer crust to maintain a comfortable home environment. Dandelion was born out of Google X Lab and is transforming the heating and cooling options available to homeowners in New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts.
The Dandelion Energy system includes a heat pump inside the home and a buried pipe system called a ground loop that transfers heat to and from the building. Geothermal technology is more efficient, cost-effective, and greener than traditional furnaces, with lower operating costs and less impact on the environment. Cathy talks about how the company got started and their partnership with utilities across the Northeast that use geothermal heat to keep their operations running and reduce peak electricity demand that strains the power grid and increases emissions during events that cause high demand, such as cold snaps and heat waves.
