Anders Wegang won the inaugural EA Sports FC Pro World Championship in Berlin, taking home $250,000 of the $1 million prize pool.
Weilgang defeated Yuval Brzyzovskiy in the final on Saturday, the longest-lasting of the 32 athletes who competed over the three-day tournament.
“I didn’t really think I won, but I felt like I played great today. I’m really happy because I finally know I’m No. 1 in the world,” said Weilgun. “I’m very grateful to all the people who have helped me throughout my career, but this is just the beginning. From now on, I want to win every tournament and I know I’m good enough to do it.”
The tournament kicked off with over 50,000 players from around the world. FC Pro Open champion PHzin and eChampions League winner Jonny were among the 32 finalists, but it was Vejrgang who emerged victorious.
Vejrgang won the single-elimination tournament, defeating Blizovsky 7-0 in the grand finals.
“The first-ever FC Pro World Championship featured incredible storylines and elite EA Sports FC competition worthy of the prestige of our flagship event and an incredible season,” said Sam Turkvas, Senior Director and Esports Commissioner, EA Sports. “The first year of FC Pro exceeded our expectations and proved there’s a global demand to compete on the virtual pitch.”
“We congratulate Anders Weilgang on becoming FC Pro’s first ever World Champion, and we’d like to thank all the players and fans for making this an unforgettable debut season.”
