Alec Stewart will take up a new role as Surrey University’s High Performance Cricket Advisor from early next year, which will see his workload “significantly reduced”.
The former England captain recently ended his 11-year tenure as Director of Cricket after winning a historic third successive County Championship with the University of Surrey in order to spend more time with his family.
Stewart, who scored 40,936 runs for Surrey over a 22-year playing career, will be responsible for continuing the success and will take up his new role for a set number of days a year from January.
Stewart, 61, said: “Everyone knows my love for the club and what it means to me, so I hope the club would like me to continue in this newly created role. I’m very happy to have been there.”
“We are confident that this new structure will allow us to continue the success we have seen in Surrey recently.”
Stewart will continue to work with Surrey head coach Gareth Batty and captain Rory Burns, as well as providing advice on talent development.
However, the club will not appoint a new director of cricket.
Club chairman Oli Slipper said: “While we completely understand and accept Alec’s decision to step down from his role as Director of Cricket at the start of the season, we will always want to maintain his expertise and influence at Surrey. “I was there,” he said.
“We have had great conversations with Alec based on common ground that is beneficial to him and the club, and I am excited to say that we have found a role that works for all parties.”
The first Test between Pakistan and England in Multan will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Cricket and Main Event from 5.30am on Monday (first pitch at 6.30am).
