Heat tarmac, cans sweating in a tote bag, somebody’s speaker rattling three flooring up: KhakiKid’s new single, Straightforward Does It, that includes Chameleon, arrives sounding precisely like that type of July night in Dublin. Beneath the fairground shimmer, although, it’s a tune about apologising to somebody who has each purpose to cease listening. Strip the whole lot else away and it’s a bloke admitting he’s a large number, figuring out full nicely he doesn’t deserve forgiveness, and asking for it anyway.
The guitar riff has that scuffed, sun-bleached indie jangle you’d affiliate with a pageant tent stage circa 2009, pulling equally from late-2000s indie and the pixel-bright gaming synth flashes of recent hyperpop. It shouldn’t work. It largely does, largely as a result of no one concerned appears bothered about making it cohere too neatly.
Chameleon, who produces and sings, is simply as central to why this works. He retains yanking the monitor sideways between straight-faced confession and outright daftness, by no means letting KhakiKid settle into one mode for lengthy.
The video, directed by Moses O’Halloran, follows KhakiKid taking part in chess in a Dublin boozer, operating round within the park and curdling into fireworks by the tip of the night time. Daft, heat, faintly chaotic. Very similar to the document.
